Cooperation

As an independent research institute of the CTU, the Klokner Institute establishes cooperation with companies both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Such cooperation basically involves qualitative and quantitative research on the reliability of structures, monitoring of the behavior of buildings, and the associated processing of expert opinions on the safety of materials and structures.

OUTBUILDINGS IN THE GROUNDS OF THE CHATEAU ŽAMBERK

  • Implementation: 2014
  • Client: A12 ARCHITEKTI
The brewery building and the adjacent granary were the subject of an extensive structural and technical survey. The survey work focused mainly on determining the strength of the masonry, the structural design and the composition of the ceiling structures, including the lower warp of the beams in the double ceiling structure of the granary. Furthermore, a detailed diagnosis of the extensive timber trusses of both buildings was carried out, including the determination of the method of truss placement on the masonry, taking into account the fact that the areas of truss placement were inaccessible within the extent of the floor plan of both buildings.

PALM GREENHOUSE IN THE GROUNDS OF THE CHATEAU LÁNY

  • Implementation: 2014
  • Client: Správa Pražského hradu
The aim of the detailed diagnosis of the steel and cast iron structure of the greenhouse was to determine the shape and dimensions of the structural elements, to evaluate the structure in terms of corrosion, to determine the strength class of steel and strength of cast iron, the chemical composition of steel and cast iron, to determine the wall thickness of the steel circular columns, to determine the type, shape and strength of the foundation material including the bearing capacity of the foundation soil. Based on the data obtained, a structural assessment of the structure was carried out. The results of the diagnostics and structural assessment were used as the initial basis for the detailed design of the greenhouse reconstruction, which started in early 2015.

WOODEN HOPPER OF SPRINKLING SALT IN BOŠOV

  • Implementation: 2014
  • Client: SUDOP PRAHA, a.s.
The subject of the diagnostics was a wooden container of gritting salt from 1999 located on the R6 expressway in the section Lubenec – Bošov. The hopper is in the shape of a cylinder with a diameter of 5,3 m and a height of 8 m, which is mounted on a circular wooden ring supported by four inclined stands of 6,5 m height. Detailed diagnostics included a visual inspection of the external and internal surfaces of the bin, probes to determine the condition of the timber, and sampling for an extensive series of compressive and flexural tensile strength tests on both the timber in contact with the spreading salt and the timber from the external surface. The aim of the diagnostics was to decide which parts of the stack needed to be replaced and to determine the effect, if any, of the spreading salt on the mechanical properties of the wood.

THE NEGRELLI VIADUCT IN PRAGUE

  • Implementation: 2014
  • Client: SUDOP PRAHA, a.s.
The aim of the diagnostic work was to determine the mechanical properties of bricks, mortar and stone of selected arches of the viaduct, including the determination of the current moisture content of the materials and the extent of water-soluble salts in the masonry. The compressive strength of the masonry was determined based on the obtained strengths of the materials. The work also included the determination of the softening coefficient of the stone (sandstone) as a function of the moisture state, conversion coefficients for different types of sandstone for the purpose of non-destructive determination of the compressive strength of the stone. The destructive compressive strength test was carried out on 21 bricks, 138 stone samples in different moisture conditions. The non-destructive in-situ compressive strength testing included approximately 100 bricks, 90 stones and 150 mortar strength locations.

STEEL GROMMETS IN THE VESTIBULE OF THE METRO STATION FLORENC

  • Implementation: 2014
  • Client: Habena, s.r.o.
The subject of the diagnostic work were three massive welded steel girders of closed cross-sections above the exits from the vestibule of the Florenc C metro station. As part of the diagnostic work, the shape of the cross-section of the gussets, the thickness of the plates from which the gussets are welded and the degree of corrosion loss were determined. In addition, inspection of the closed parts of the gussets was carried out by fibroscope, an orientation check of the welds by ultrasound, the structural design of the fit of the gussets to the central steel columns, including the shape and dimensions of the cross-sections of the columns, and a non-destructive measurement of the hardness of the steel for subsequent conversion to strength and determination of the strength class of the steel. The diagnostics identified the type, location, and current condition of the bearings that are located on the piers and support the lobby ceiling structure.
